December Updates

Ex Nihilo Friends,

Club night is on break for the holidays! Our next meeting will be January 6th. If you have questions or are looking for help while we pause club nights, please don’t hesitate to reach out either to coaches individually or to the group via Slack.

Looking for additional debate practice? A few of our students have been coordinating practice debate sessions, often held online. If you’re looking for additional practice, check the student chat –or you can contact Laeken (for LD or Parli) or Emery (for TP). Email info@nihilo.club for their contacts if needed.

SoCal Classic Tournament Update:
Yes, it’s official: we are up and running to host our annual tournament! As you hopefully know, we’re running our SoCal Classic this year out of Concordia University Irvine, Feb 27th – Mar 1st. Tournament details are all here on StoaHub, and registration for our club members is now open –a few days ahead of regular registration. Use NihiloClassic as your early access code to register, but be sure not to complete your payment. If you missed club night this week, you missed the fun announcement that registration will be free for Ex Nihilo families. Our Tournament Team has been hard at work in the planning stage, and we’re excited to be able to waive these fees for our club support. If you know the volunteer area you’d like to help with as we move into the team building phase (or if you don’t know what is needed but trust us, ha!), contact Ben Hodge, our tournament volunteer coordinator. If you know of families from other clubs who want to help, and desire early access before Wednesday’s rush, they can email tournament@nihilo.club to receive a volunteer early access code.

Don’t forget – regular SoCal Classic registration will open this Wednesday and may fill to capacity. Do register early if you are able, as we want our own families to not be waitlisted. SoCal Juniors competitions, too!!

Script Submission Help:
Students, plan to bring a copy of your prepared speech script, to include citation page, for coach review when we meet in January. We have several parents who volunteer on Script Review teams throughout the year, who are a valuable and willing resource to help fine tune speech scripts for stress-free submissions. Stoa Script Submission procedures are found here under the Submission Resources heading: https://www.stoausa.org/speech-resources, along with tutorials and tips.

I believe that covers everything for now. Enjoy this season together, friends. Merry Christmas!

Warmly,
Jessica Halfpap
