Hello friends,
SoCal Classic: It’s been exciting to be behind the scenes as our tournament registration comes along this week. We’ve had a stronger turnout than expected, and have nearly filled 30 competition rooms at Biola, welcoming more than 200 students from 25 different clubs together to compete. We still have some room in most events to add competitors – if you know of someone who would be interested, encourage them to sign up now.
Club Dinner: Traditional chili and rice, $2.50/person. RSVP in #mondaydinner Slack post: [Monday dinner RSVP here]
Christmas Schedule: Reminder, no club Dec 18-Jan 1st.
Lincoln Douglas (LD) Resolution announcement: As many of you know, Stoa voted this year to break the LD year into three resolutions. Today the 2nd resolution was announced, to be used in competition from 2/1/24 – 3/31/24. LD students, you now have 2 months to prepare for your next resolution: Resolved: National security concerns ought to be valued above individual rights. Happy values-researching, LD debaters!
Dec 4th coaching sign-up: Coaching schedule 12/4 – coaches and students. Students, remember to bring a copy of your script and citations to club for coach review! Several students are finishing preparations to compete at C4 and Christmas Colloquium next week, Dec 8-9. Script submission for SoCal Classic runs from now until Dec 15th. (Students, I’m late in posting this – go ahead and sign up and we’ll have adults fill coaching simultaneously.)
Other ways to help: Tournament Tips — Would you like to help compile an informal Tournament Guide for our club members? This would be something of a “cliff notes” for new families and for future use that we can have as a club resource. Competitive forensics can be overwhelming when just beginning. I’m picturing a tournament overview: registration timeline/tips, script submission helpful links/info, basic tournament etiquette, what is a “posting,” how do I know where to go, what does adjudication mean and who attends, when will I receive my ballots, where can I see overall results, etc. New families wanted here in this process too (!) — let us know where you’ve been struggling in these first few tournaments and we will include those areas, in hopes of improving ease for all.
Merchandise: We’ve talked about the desire for a club shirt/hoodie. Anyone want to take this and run with it? There was a preliminary design that looked something like this (below), but it has collected dust and could well be reimagined.
If you’re interested in any of the above, or have questions or concerns, do please reach out!
Warmly,
Jessica/Mrs. Halfpap
