Welcome new families, summer camps, apol workshop, fall schedule, & recent camping fun.
Ex Nihilo friends,
Welcome, summer!!
We have a few club items and reminders to pass along, as well as projects in the works as we apply feedback from this year to the upcoming club season. Thank you to all who brought ideas and encouragement to the table, we are all so grateful for families who pour into the club and our children. Keep the ideas coming.
New families, we are glad you are here! Thank you for coming to visit. If you’d like to be added to our Slack channel for additional club dialogue, please email us at info@nihilo.club and we will send you an invite to join discussions there. Our club calendar can be found here: https://nihilo.club/events/month/ along with general resources that might be helpful at https://nihilo.club/.
Summer Camp incentive: If your family is considering attending a speech or debate camp this summer, we would like to help and encourage you. For each student who participates in a summer speech/debate camp, your Ex Nihilo club dues will be reduced by $50. We’ve found summer involvement to be a terrific way to begin your Stoa season. Information for nearby summer camps can be found on our website resources tab. If you know of camps we’ve not yet linked, please share and we’ll add. There is rumor of a San Diego camp returning this July — we’ll post here and on Slack as soon as we know more: https://nihilo.club/summer-camps-2023/.
Apologetics Summer Workshop: Coach Lee is leading his 2nd annual Summer Apol Workshop for any interested students. If you didn’t make the recent introductory meeting, you are still welcome to join. The group will be reading excerpts from Knowing God’s Truth, by Jon Nielson, building/answering cards from the Stoa apologetics question bank, discussing reading topics as a group, and beginning research and presentation on various Mars Hill topics. Remaining workshop dates are: June 17, July 1, 15, 29, and Aug 12 & 26. Slack channel #apol and Google chat Apol/MarsHill (contact Mr Lee to be added) for updates and details. (link: Apologetics question list) (link: Mars Hill topic prompts)
Fall schedule planning: Mark your calendar for Monday, Sept 11th, as our 1st club meeting of the fall season. We’re excited to announce a slight change to the weekly schedule this semester, adding the option to meet early for dinner (in lieu of a snack break). If you would like and are able, plan this year to join us Mondays at 5:15pm for pizza ($1/slice) and fellowship (priceless!). We’ll begin our regular club agenda at 6pm: speech 6-7:45pm, debate 7:45-9:15pm. Feel free to bring your own sack dinner of course, if preferred!
Brainstorming help: We’re compiling a resource file of helpful books, videos, documents, websites, etc, for families and competitors in all stages and events. If you have recommendations to share, please send them in and we will compile on our resource page. Summer is an excellent time to read and brainstorm, and a reference “launching pad” will be helpful. Also, if you are interested in volunteering behind the scenes this summer, please do! We welcome the help and team leads will be working on coaching plans, tournament hosting preparations, hospitality planning, admin/web/communications updates, etc.
And finally, a few photos of course. Thank you to Susanna for inviting us all outdoors with her for a bit of camping respite, and thanks to all who made the effort to join in. Time together enjoying the beauty of creation is always a blessing — even with a bit of rain and wind. Thank you, Lord!
Warmly,
Jessica Halfpap
